MELINDA HURTADO

ST. EDWARD’S UNIVERISTY SENIOR GRAPHIC DESIGN EXHIBIT

The Austin Moonlight Towers

Melinda Hurtado is a designer and photographer based in Austin, Texas. In college, most of their work centered around printmaking, publications and advertising. They incorporate their own photography into their work as much as they can because they believe it allows them to have more control over a project’s overall direction and presentation. Hurtado strives to inform and create narrative in their pieces, in a way that inspires the creativity of the viewer.

Hurtado created The Austin Moonlight Towers because of their high regard for history and love for their hometown. The Moonlight Towers were built and installed in 1894 to provide the city with its very first lighting system, these are the last structures of their kind to be found anywhere in the world. Interestingly enough, many Austinites, even Hurtado them self, have passed by these magnificent structures without knowing what they are or the history they hold. Hurtado created this zine to serve as a small guide to Austin’s Moonlight Towers and to illuminate a unique part of the city’s history.
